"Pickles" 40x40" Painting
"Pickles" 40x40" Painting
This is an original 40x40” acrylic and oil painting on a gallery thick, 1.5” birch wood panel. "Pickles" is the sixth painting in the Sustenance Series.
"Pickles" was painted, in part, thanks to an overwhelming number of TikTok followers commenting that I absolutely NEEDED to paint pickles, the world would not be complete without a painting of some fermented cucumbers. I just to happened to agree and have been thrilled and fascinated to find a corner of the internet that is absolutely obsessed with pickles.
Similar to the other Sustenance pieces, while painting "Pickles", I fell in love with the swoops and blops of paint that diverge from what we typically hold in our minds as "pickle-y" or "pickle-like" colours. Wonderfully, greens and pinks work beautifully together, the result within "Pickles" is a sparkling, glittery scene of dill pickles, partially submerged in a black bowl, glistening perhaps somewhat provocatively (enough to get some people commenting 👀 emojis at the scene came together). It's a painting that's sparked epic debate online about what indeed the best sort of pickle is, "dill" winning by a landslide and flavours like "bread and butter" being a popular, yet also despised, option.
All in all, "Pickles" was an absolute joy to photograph and paint.
Stand close to the work and see the piece fragment into impressionistic geometry, or stand back and watch it knit together into a more photo-realistic artwork.
A signature look of the series is how the painting wraps around the edges of the panel by a 1/2”, the remaining depth was left the blonde birch wood. The entire piece, edges included, is coated in a satin varnish.

Care Guide
Care Guide
Paintings get dusty from time to time. I recommend making a micro-fibre cloth lightly damp with clean water, and very gently running it over the area(s) in question.

The Sustenance Series
In July 2021 an afternoon snack of some dewy cherries in a bowl launched a multi-year series when I became enamoured with capturing vibrant still-life scenes in acrylic & oil paint.
Originally meant as a one-off, my painting “Cherries” was an inspiration experiment for me, especially considering I was predominantly a landscape painter then.
Getting my paint brushes in hand each day to continue work on the 48x48” birch wood panel was an absolute joy beyond anything I’d experienced as an artist at that time.
There’s a quote by Jennifer Lee that goes: “Be fearless in the pursuit of what sets your soul on fire”. Perhaps painting a big scene of cherries doesn’t seem to be the most daring thing, but for me stretching to create something so out of my comfort zone, and chasing that bubbling of joy was exactly that: pursuing something that set my soul alight.
“Cherries” became the first of the collection that would eventually be called The Sustenance Series.
I’ve been lucky to connect with so many people online who’ve contributed ideas for subjects to the series, commented support for the continuation of the collection and supported the work by buying a print or original piece.
